Shin-Ei

The great OEM manufacturer of ultra Vintage Japanes Effects. If you were a manufacturer and in need of a line of effects call these guys!... At least, in the past as they don't exist anymore. Since Shin-Ei stuff appeared under so many different names it can be easy to find once you have done your homework. Some of the names under which Shin-Ei was sold have become commonly known. Names like Apollo and Shaftsbury come to mind, as well as the most closely related name, Companion. Anything with these names will certainly make big bucks when it surfaces and is sold in the right way on the right place. I've been outbid on Shin-Ei stuff many times. It seems the collectors have discovered the brand... Still, if you do the homework right there's stuff to obtain.

Rands Fuzz

Rands Fuzz

Now, here's one of those brands everyone seems to have forgotten. Seeing a Shaftsbury duo fuzz oging for somewhere around 450 British Pounds this one cost me some 20 euro's and is identical other than the brand label. OK, drawback, the bottom plate is missing. The cool thing is that the protective foil on the labels is still in place.

Honey Hurricane Wah

It's said that Honey is the predecessor of Shin-Ei. This one is a The classic Hurricane Wah seen pretty often but in a near mint condition. Amazing considering it's age!

Does it get any cooler? I picked this one up at a reasonable Buy It Now on Ebay.de. What I expected was true. It was an absolutely new one, in its protective bag, In the original styrofoam box etcetera and, even smelling like new!

Never skip Flea Markets as you can find bargains there. I wrote a review on this one on Harmony Central some 7 years ago, resulting in numerous offers over the years to take it off my hands. Price generously offered usually what I paid or even double that price. Look up that review and you'll understand why I declined all offers. Generally my stuff is not for sale but when asked in the right way and with a decent offer I might, yes, might, consider.

Fuzz Wah

The Fuzz-Wah. By far the most commonly seen Shin-Ei. Sound? Brute force fuzz and a Wah that will get you through that gig but not much more.

Shin-Ei Phaser Tone PT18

Shin-Ei Phaser Tone PT18

Finally managed to get that additional name to your "Shin-Ei with another name tag" list. I never managed to get a Resley-Tone RT18 as the prices they ususally go for don't fit what I can spend. This one showed up on Ebay with that Rands name tag earlier mentioned. When it arrived I found that, a) it was in a close to mint condition and b) when the Rands tag was removed it was a full Shin-Ei Phasertone PT-18. Inside there is, as is the case with all Shin-Ei stuff, the schematic, stating RT-18 and showing the Resley-Tone schematic, proving it is in fact a Resley Tone. Soundwise, absolutely magnificent. Therefore, all credits to Mr. Fumio Mieda, the designer, who came up with this absolute classic

Avora Wah

Avora Wah

Without absolute certainty I think that Avora was the Shin-Ei branded stuff sold in Holland. Avora has a pretty poor reputation here which I think was fully deserved. I played a former Eastern Germany made Avora Guitar amplifier as one of my first amplifiers and it wassn't much. It's said they made (or had made) pretty crappy guitars as well. So to complete their product line they had no.1 OEM manufacturer Shin-Ei in action.

Pedals of the Avora brand seem to be pretty rare. I know of one Avora Fuzz in existence which is a definitive Shin-Ei as well. So, when finding this one online for sale on a non-auction classifieds page it was a matter of bidding the price asked and hoping for the deal to come thru.... which it fortunately did. Other than the cosmetics of the name tag there's no difference between any other Shin-Ei wah. The only odd thing as compared to the name tags on many of the other Shin-Ei tagged effects seems to be that the name tag on this one is not parallellogram shaped.

I won't complain too much about the stuff one can get online. However, this one was raped to such an externd in a feeble attempt to make it look like an original it is close to beyond reatoration. I'll see what I can do. No hurries though.

Hohner Volume Pedal

Another poor victim of the Shin-Ei OEM manufaucturing biz. It's a volume pedal and therefore the only thin one will find inside is a pot. Came with the original box though.

Shin-Ei Wah

Thank you! Extremely fast purchase from a local classified. Considering the age of the thing it's in a rather mint condition and the wear of the two screws holding the footplate isn't that bad as compared to other Shin-Ei's I've seen (among wich one of my own).

Companion Hurricane wah 2

Another case of an add in a local classifieds page. The seller obviously had little experience with selling online and got pissed within a few hours that his highest bidder did not respond, removing all bids and starting all over again. One phone call and some money later..

This one is a Companion branded one. Other than that i'ts identical to the Honey above.
